Frequently Asked Questions
Should I speak only one language to my child?
Speak to your child in the language you know best. Kids can learn many languages at once, and doing so can help their language skills grow. Speak the language you're comfortable with and enjoy talking with your child.
My child is starting to stutter, what do I do?
It's normal for kids to have some trouble speaking clearly. If your child's stuttering gets worse or bothers them, get help from a speech therapist. They can figure out how serious it is and give you ways to help your child at home. Be supportive and don't pressure your child about their speech.
Is it a language disorder or a learning disability?
Language disorders involve trouble understanding and using language. Learning disabilities involve trouble with skills like reading, writing, and math. Kids can have both problems. A speech therapist can help you find out what's going on and create a plan to help your child.
What's the difference between speech, language, and social communication?
Speech is how kids learn to talk and share their thoughts. Language is how we use words, gestures, and expressions to communicate. Social communication is how we interact with others, using language and nonverbal cues. Each is important for kids to learn and grow.
What causes speech and language problems?
Many things can cause speech and language problems. Some kids develop slower than others. Some have trouble due to an injury or illness. Others have problems because of hearing loss or physical differences. Speech therapists work to find the cause and create a plan to help each child.
Did I cause my child's speech and language delay?
No, you didn't cause your child's speech and language delay. It can come from many things. You can help by following the advice of your child's therapist and doing activities to help them learn.
Will my child catch up?
Some kids need help to catch up in their speech and language skills. Get support and use strategies to help your child grow, and they'll have a better chance of improving.
What is 'parent coaching,' and why are we doing it?
